Key considerations for Loft Conversions: The practicalities

Loft Conversions are the perfect way to extend the space in your home. With a range of loft conversion options available, and a variety of ways to use your new space, it is easy to get caught up in the design. However, loft conversions must be practical too. Here at Preston’s favourite loft conversion specialist, Pinnacle Loft Conversions, we are time served professionals. As a result, we have produced this guide to the key considerations for loft conversions.

#1- Insulation

Here at Pinnacle Loft Conversions we have previously discussed the importance of thermal loft insulation. But in terms of practical considerations for your loft conversion, you should note:

⦁ high performance insulation board should be positioned below the rafters, and preferably between them too. This wont just keep your heating bills down, it will also help heat your new loft space.
⦁ a space above the insulation is necessary to make sure your loft can “breathe”, allow for good ventilation, and prevent condensation build up. However, if your roof uses breathable felt, this is not as important.

#2- More Insulation

This time we are talking about sound insulation. This reduces unwanted noise in the loft itself, and can also stop noise from the loft disturbing the household below, or the neighbours.

To do this, you should use a 10 cm sound deadening quilt in the floor void and the partitions around the room.

#3- Staying warm

Heating is one of the key considerations for loft conversions. Your new loft conversion might look great, but nobody wants to spend their time in a cold room! The best way to heat your loft is to make the room an addition of your existing central heating. However, this can cause some issues if your boiler is not capable of servicing another radiator. You could end up needing to replace the boiler altogether!

As an alternative you could use an electric fire, or a space heater to keep your loft conversion warm.

#4- Electricity

Any loft conversion is going to need electrics. As a result, you need to get in touch with a qualified electrician at an early stage. This can help you stay within time scale and budget.

In summary

There are several key considerations for loft conversions. By taking these into account before you begin, you can save time and money. If you want to discuss your own loft conversion, contact us at Pinnacle Loft Conversions today.
