What is a loft conversion balcony?

A loft conversion balcony is a balcony that attaches to your loft conversion window/door space. By extending your loft conversion windows to full length, they can be used as a door to a balcony area which can bring in natural light, allow air to circulate and extend the usable space of your loft conversion. This can also raise the value of your property.

Is planning permission necessary?

For some balconies, it will be necessary to achieve planning permission before installing a balcony, as this may project from the roof of your property. You may also need permission from the neighbours, depending on the type of balcony you choose.

Different options for adding a balcony to your loft conversion

There are several different options to add a balcony to your loft conversion. These include:

  • Creating a Juliet balcony- this involves positioning some railings or bars on the outside of the window, to create the illusion of a balcony that you can stand at. However, this doesn’t add space to your loft conversion, only natural light.
  • Creating a true balcony- With a load bearing separate platform outside of your loft conversion, you will definitely need planning permission. But you can also position furniture and create a space to unwind outside.
